Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting DVD Player

Review : Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting DVD Player

I wouldn’t call myself an audio/video file but I do feel I know a little to keep my purchases of equipment knowlegable(I don’t take many things back). I try and use the customer reviews as my key because I never buy anything out of the gate. It has been a good 3 yrs sinse the purchase of this particular player and i have to say it is a really nice machine.

For those of you still in the CRT monitor world I have to say it rocks. I use an Onkio receiver 7.1 & a Mitz Crt upconvert or not the picture is fantastic. It doesn’t hurt that the unit itself looks very posh for a now under a 100 dollar machine. If your looking for a player that play’s your movie piture crisp and clear grab one before there gone. I’m going to grab another to keep in storage i liked it so much and at the prices they are now why not. I can’t comment on High def monitors except my roomate with an LCD thought “Finding nemo” looked much better on my CRT.

Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting DVD Player Features

  • HDMI Output
  • Hi-Def Conversion
  • EZ View Letter Box Eliminator
  • Plays DVD, R/RW, Audio, SVCD
  • FLT Display

Samsung’s DVD-HD850 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player enhances video performance by increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats (720p/768p/1080i), enabling you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice the resolution of progressive scan DVD players.

It’s compatible with a wide range of disc formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, and SVCD, as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG file formats. Compression rates supported for MP3 are from 128-192 kbps and for WMA from 64-192 kbps. JPEG files can be seen in a slide show with intervals of 6, 12, or 18 seconds between images; and you can zoom in (2x or 4x) on an image or rotate it 90-degrees clockwise.

The bookmark function lets you mark and store up to three scenes at a time for easy recall. Instant replay shows you the previous 10 seconds of the movie again–in case you missed something important. Instant skip jumps ahead 10 seconds–in case you want to miss something. And parental control lets you set a password that must be given before a password-protected disc can be viewed.

The 720p/768p/1080i DVD Players greatly enhance video performance by increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats. A normal DVD player outputs 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive Scan DVD players can roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p video. the HD players enable you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice the resolution of progressive scan DVD players. It is not High Definition DVD, so it is not a new format and works with existing discs.

It features the following video and audio connections (which includes HDMI for uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped audio/video component):

  • Composite AV Out (RCA): 1
  • S-Video Out: 1
  • Component Video Out: 1
  • HDMI Out: 1
  • Coaxial Digital Audio Out: 1
  • Optical Digital Audio Out: 1

Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Review : Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Buying this product went flawlessly. Received it a couple of days after purchase. Setup was pretty simple. The only issue that I have had with the product, is that when using the HDMI cable that connects to the TV, I sometimes lose the video signal. I can wiggle the cable at the BD player, or unplug it and plug it back in, then the video comes back. This symptom happens everytime the system is used. I changed connection method to R/W/Y video connection and have had no further issues (other than reduced video quality, due to not being able to use HDMI). I am an electronics technician, so I will probably be taking a look at that connection to see if they’re is something than can be done to resolve this issue.

Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Features

  • Experience vivid, crystal-clear visuals that are more natural, more realistic and simply stunning with Blu-ray’s full 1080p HD resolution
  • Stream Blockbuster, Netflix, YouTube & Pandora
  • Multi-format playback lets you enjoy Blu-ray Discs, DVD, CD, MP3/WMA, JPEG, AVCHD and more
  • Enjoy BD-Live support for accessing fresh content
  • Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD MA technologies for high-definition audio

Samsung DVD-HD950 HD Conversion DVD Player , Black

Samsung DVD-HD950 HD Conversion DVD Player , Black

Review : Samsung DVD-HD950 HD Conversion DVD Player , Black

I tend to agree with most of what has been said about this DVD player. It’s pretty decent, although probably not as good as of a picture as some others out there (Panasonic, Oppo) in the same price category. But then, can you really tell the difference and is it worth the extra money or loss of features? That decision is really for you to make. Different things are important for different people.

The DVD-HD950 does give you a lot of features for the price. The most highly rated upscaling player in terms of picture quality (Oppo) does not have the EZ-View feature (I *really* like this feature because my LCD TV does not do perfect blacks. Blacks bars on 2.39:1 movies are OK, but grey-ish black bars stink). The Panasonic S97S does have the equivalent of EZ-View, but is notably more expensive and does not come with cables (making it even more expensive in the end). The DVD-HD950 is a higher-end version of the DVD-HD850 in that it does DVD-Audio and SACD and comes with HDMI/DVI cables.

Your mileage as far as the upscaling/deinterlacing quality will vary depending on how well you TV does this. Some TVs come do with better technology than most upscaling DVD players, so you should try the player in all modes and see which one looks the best. Furthermore, keep in mind that which mode looks the best may also depend on the movie itself and how it was encoded.

Speaking of encoding, I *have* to chime in here regarding the confusion of progressive vs. interlaced in the actual DVD encoding. In short: “Aleksey” and “Count” basically are both right!

The long answer: All DVDs for the North America market store “fields” with 240 lines each. There is no way in the MPEG-2 scheme used by DVD players that you can store a single image of 480 *consecutive* lines. HOWEVER, film sources only have a new frame every 1/24th second. This means that it takes less time for your DVD player to read an odd/even pair of 240-line interaced fields (it does this every 1/30th of a second) than it does for the film frame to change. DVDs made from a film source take advantage of this fact and store a single “progressive” 480-line film frame as two interlaced 240-line fields. The DVDs have a special flag that tells the DVD player not to use the normal de-interlacing scheme it would use for standard NTSC 480i video. Instead, when it sees this flag your DVD player reads an odd/even pair of interlaced fields, and then weaves them together to construct a single perfectly progressive movie frame.

The hard part about deinterlacing a standard NTSC 480i stream is that the image actually changes between each 240-line field. For example, if I am watching a tennis ball fly across the screen on my local TV broadcast, then the position of that ball actually changes every 1/60th second. The odd and even interlaced fields are not part of the exact same image. This means that the deinterlacing technology has to try and compensate for this. This is a very difficult task and is the reason deinterlacing technology is such a big deal. This is in contrast to a film source, where your DVD player performs almost no work at all to reconstruct a perfect progressive image.

For more on this topic, I suggest reading sections 1.40 and 3.8 of the “Jim Taylor’s Official DVD FAQ” availible online.

Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player

Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player

Review : Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player

I neither wanted nor needed another DVD player. I already have three. But this player was part of a rebate offer for the Samsung phone that I bought. What a surprise I got when I received this thing! I was expecting a cheap DVD player. This is not. This is a very decent quality player for, if you actually paid for it, a good price. The remote control is intuitively designed and the picture and sound quality is better than average. The only major gripe I have about it is that the video quality is just a bit jagged, like a Photoshop picture that’s been sharpened too much. I’m still a diehard fan of Pioneer video products, but I’m going to keep my eye on Samsung. It’s the company with the momentum. I originally planned to sell this player as soon as I got it. But it appears that I will be keeping it after all.

Samsung DVD-S221 DVD Player Features

  • Component, S-video and composite-video output terminals work with most standard and advanced televisions
  • Elegant titanium-finish front panel; DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, and MP3 CD-R/CD-RW playback
  • Phantom Surround processor delivers surround effects from any two speakers
  • Advanced Navigation system simplifies viewing; motion zoom lets you magnify select portions of the screen during playback
  • Measures 17 x 2.75 x 9.5 inches (W x H x D)

Samsung’s affordable, titanium-finished DVD-S221 features high-end component-video outputs, a feature called Advanced Disc Navigation to simplify setup and operation, and built-in MP3 decoding for your home-brewed CD compilations. Component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any set.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player’s digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Other features include 10-second instant replay, motion zoom, chapter preview (which generates thumbnail images from disc chapters), music track programming, repeat and random play, and a compact “easy remote” for clear, simple operation of the player.

What’s in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user’s manual, a stereo analog-audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty information.

Samsung DVD-AR650 DVD Recorder

Samsung DVD-AR650 DVD Recorder

Review : Samsung DVD-AR650 DVD Recorder

After receiving my DVD-AR650, it took me five frustrating nights to get the unit properly hooked up. This is definitely not a plug-and-play unit, but perhaps that is the nature of DVRs that have to operate with so many other ‘foreign’ components. I thought I would share my experiences here.

I use the AR650 in conjunction with Time Warner Cable’s Scientific American cable box. To minimize frustration and avoid reading the incomprehensible instruction manual, here’s how it works. The cable box receives and decodes the cable channels. The Video Out cord then plugs into the DVR; likewise the cable box’s audio out cords run into AR650’s audio-in areas, but please be aware they need to go into the “component audio in” inputs or the unit will record video with no sound. (This was a mistake I initially made.)

I made the mistake of buying this unit thinking I’d be able to use the EPG (channel guide) with Time Warner cable’s channel guide… nope. The EPG is for OTA (over the air) channels only and is useless when used with cable channels. Instead, you’ll need to use your Time Warner channel guide (via your Cable Box remote) or go online to find out the time/channel you want to record. Then program the AR650 with that information. Lack of EPG via your AR650 is not a big deal at all… it just means using two remotes instead of one.

In order to record a given channel at a given time, the AT650 has to control the cable box and switch to that channel at the appropriate time. This means you need to properly set everything up… begin by doing a channel scan so your box knows what channels you have available (choose ‘cable’ if that’s what you have). The scan will take about 45 mins. Now go back into settings. The settings I use in conjunction with my Scientfic American cable box are: Control ‘On’, Connection ‘S-Video’, CH Digital Lock ‘Off’, Mode for Set ‘Off’, Brand Code ‘0277′. Be sure the cable box controller wire is connected and the end is resting near the actual cable box so it can be controlled via IR signal. (I read the Scientific American is ’sensitive’ and does not need to be taped directly to the unit. So I just have it hanging over the top of the cable box loosely, and that works.)

Some people have complained the unit is noisy. I agree, although the noise can be mitigated. For one, set the unit’s setting for ‘Instant Recording’ to OFF. If you do so, there is a lot less noise. The other thing you can do is turn off the unit completely when you’re not watching TV. You do get a slight hum when the unit’s on but it’s really not that bad, although ideally the unit would be silent.

These settings worked for me and I’m now blissfully recording programs without having to pay a monthly Tivo or Time Warner extortion fee.
